Professor Dimitrios Buhalis is a Strategic Management and Marketing expert with specialisation in Information Communication Technology applications in the Tourism, Travel, Hospitality and Leisure industries.
He is the Director of the eTourism Lab and Deputy Director of the International Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Research, at Bournemouth University Business School in England. He is an active tourism practitioner, co-creating innovations and re-engineering business process with organisations around the world. He has been advising Aliathon Holiday Village in Cyprus, Hotel Icon in Hong Kong on strategic marketing and customer experiences as well as social media engagement. He has also been advising private sector organisations such TUI, Pestana, Opodo.com, YouTravel.com on the strategic aspects of their business. Since 2017 he is also adviser to the President of Dusit Thani College in Bangkok Thailand. He has completed assignments with Government and Public Sector organisations including: Smart Tourism for Bournemouth Tourism, development of an eTourism Strategy for the Egyptian Tourism Authority and the Ministry of Tourism in Egypt as part of the Austrian Twinning project, the development of a Master Plan for Tourism in Crimea, Ukraine and the feasibility for the development of Hotel School for the Government of Andorra. He also delivered the Master Workshop for the Ministry of Tourism at the Sultanate of Oman on World Tourism Day 2018.
Professor Buhalis’ industry innovation and policy experience includes managerial and non executive directorship roles in the tourism and hospitality industry, as well as 30 years of international tourism and hospitality research and consultancy. He spent the academic year 2021-2022 as Visiting Professor at the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Throughout his extended career of advising, researching and consulting, Dimitrios has worked around the world and has delivered projects, presentations, conferences and consultations in the UK, Ireland, France, Portugal, Spain, Andorra, Greece, Serbia, Italy, Malta, Cyprus, Turkey, Romania, Sweden, Finland, Bahamas, Tunisia, Costa Rica, Thailand, Denmark, Norway, Austria, Slovenia, Estonia, Egypt, Mauritius, United Arab Emirates, Ghana, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Brazil. Professor Buhalis has written or co-edited more than 20 books, including two books on eTourism, including eTourism Case Studies, published by Butterworth as well as eTourism: Strategic Information Technology for Tourism published by Pearson (Prentice Hall/Financial Times) and three ENTER conference proceedings published by Springer; two books on Tourism Management and Marketing published by Palgrave Macmillan; two books the Future of Tourism, namely: Tourism Business Frontiers, Tourism Management Dynamics published by Butterworth-Heinemann; two books on accessible tourism Accessible tourism: Inclusion, Disability, Ageing Population and Tourism and accessible tourism: concepts and Issues; as well as Tourism Distribution Channels (Thomson), Managing alliances in the global hospitality and tourism industry. He has also published more than 150 articles in scholarly journals, conference proceedings and consultancy reports.
Professor Buhalis was Programme Leader MSc in Tourism Marketing and the founder of the MSc in eTourism and Director of the Centre for eTourism Research (CeTR), Reader in Business Information Management at the School of Management, University of Surrey for the period 2000-2007. He was also an elected member of the University Senate (2003-2007). Dimitrios has served as Adjunct Professor at the MBA in Hospitality Management at the IMHI (Cornell University-Ecole Superieure des Sciences Economiques et Commerciales ESSEC) in Paris, Visiting Professor at School of Hotel and Tourism Management at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, China and Professor Associado at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. He has been teaching tourism related subjects in more than 50 Universities around the world. He is regarded as an expert in the impacts of ICTs in the tourism industry and eTourism, the management of tourism distribution channels as well as strategic tourism marketing and management.
